When I’m Gone

It saddens me that people are

So short-sighted, they don’t see far

And that these words will not be read

Until I live no more, lay dead

It is the truth, I do not care

What you might think, you’re unaware

Just what these things I say right now

Might truly mean, and yet somehow

You live inside your same old box

And if the truth stops by and knocks

You plug your ears, say it’s not so

Pretend it’s not there, even though

Late at night, all that remains

Is blood that flows inside your veins

You can’t escape that which is true

That greed and envy consume you

‘Tis why so many are not read

Until they lie alone, and dead

Mentors of me, they say it’s so

Their names are Edgar, and Van Gogh

The One: First Entry

Can we be honest with ourselves for a moment? I want to talk about some things. Things like Facebook. Twitter. Instagram, perhaps. Hell, even Tinder…anything that lets people advertise who they are (or at least who they want to be) without having to concern themselves with the real world.

Yeah, I know.

It’s not easy to examine one’s self. We’d all much rather be judging someone else. But right now, let’s do the hard thing and focus the lens introspectively.

Sure, it’s easy to look on at the spinning wheel that is social media, watching as the people we know and grew up with move on with their lives. Comparison is the theif of joy, ain’t it? That’s what they say, at least.

It’s funny though because everyone’s aware, whether consciously or subconsciously, that social media is just a highlight reel. If only we knew who we all are after each one of those many layers of social graces and obligatory formalities got peeled back. The real, you know? Because as much as we market how cool our lives are, at the end of the day…it’s validation that we really want.

Most of us, that is. And you know what? That’s perfectly normal. Not at all a thing to be ashamed of.

After all, most of us just want someone who knows us. Who understands us. Who IS us. We want to enjoy life with a person who gets, more so than anyone, who we truly are. And I’m not talking about the person at three o’clock, bringing in coffee with the same fake grin we all wear knowing we’re just waiting for the hour hand to get knocked ahead a couple notches. I’m talking about the person we are when the day’s facade is over, the candles go out, and the door closes. That person you see when the ambient light from the TV flicks on as it highlights the it-was-a-long-day-fucked-up-hair and feetie pajamas silhouette. That’s the person we’re searching for.

And you want to know something? I bet you’ve already met them.

I know I have.

What If They Died

What if they died?

What if that artist

Who painted their works

So great, yet shunned

For personality quirks

What if that singer

Who hit impossible notes

Wasn’t caught up in drama

Or the brunt of your jokes

What if you focused

On content they write

Instead of the bullshit

The cheap and contrite

Why is it, so often

An artist, who yearned

Must die to achieve

The recognition they’ve earned

It isn’t the painter

Whose genius, they leave

It’s ego that chains us

A jealous reprieve

For when you are dead

You’re no threat to us

So sure, we can like you

Just stay off of my bus

Some day, I do hope

The people will see

That passion is living

And envy is greed

A Respectable Career

I did what you said

I did what you taught

I practiced and practiced

I studied a lot

I did all those things

You said would pay off

To get a career

So I wouldn’t be lost

You know what? It’s funny

All of us writers are linked

Try to fit this world mold, still unhappy

I mean come on, what’d you think?

You tell us that dreaming is stupid

Get a job, blink your eyes and wake up

Keep punching that card every morning

The weekend will hand you a cup

Sure, I did college at Vandy

It taught me a hell of a lot

A degree in Econ/Corporate Strategy

But the lesson in life’s what I bought

The people I met all around me

The times and the fun that we had

That’s the career that surrounds me

The job to make people feel glad

To give people love that they can’t get

From working a 9 until 5

After all if it wasn’t for these things

What’s the point in being alive?

Forward

It’s often that i see this

If truth were to be told

Despite the goal: inspire

It turns warmth to bitter cold

If ever you are struggling

If ever you are down

Remember they don’t matter

And that words can’t bring you down

For often will you hear, when

You are looking far ahead

That all your dreams are fiction

Come and fit the mold, instead

Be strong, my friend, for as we

Chase our dreams and live as one

Your calling will come one day

That it’s justified, your run

Don’t ever tell yourself “no”

It just simply can’t be done

Instead get up, get grinding

Until that day has fine’ly come

Our time on Earth has limits

It’s too short for stress and strife

Just find what makes you happy

And live your dream, this life

The Other Side

Oh my freakin’ God, guys

Here we go again

Just throw the leather ball, dude

My team – it needs a win

You really aren’t oppressed, guys

And my moneys on the line

So if you don’t deliver, then

I’m trading you next time

Leave politics to them, bro

‘Cause no one really cares

Just score and make my team win

Leave out the thoughts upstairs
—————————————————
Now hang on one damn second, man

You haven’t heard my side

I’ve put up with all this bullshit

For my whole entire life

I’m sick of all the judgment

When I walk into the store

And how so many hate us

Except for when we score

I’m more than that, my brother

I’m a human, after all

And treating me as you are

It drives us up the wall

So please, my man, just stop it

We want all to get along

You’ll win your league, I promise

When you know that we belong

Become

Frustrating, it is

To retreat to the hole

As you narrowly focus

On your one, divine goal

A life you desire

Yet you know you can’t grasp

As attentions diverted

The white fence, it won’t last

And how hard can it be

When to God, you enlist

When you tormentingly believe

That He might not exist

My mission is clear

It’s the path, I await

This life, I’ve committed

No regard to my fate

For greatness, inside

It lies in us all

If only you find it

Your one, dying call

The Writers Group

There exists a place

In fabled lore

Where writers race

Both rich and poor

Some ask for tips

Some say hello

With wine-filled sips

True colors show

Some fight a lot

They bitch and moan

More oft’ than not

They’re sad, alone

And in this land

The fun, I sing

Is throwing sand

And arguing

Much joy, though sin

The jerks, to mock

And when you win

They always block

That’s when you know

Their points are poop

Come, join the show

This Writers Group

Toe in the Water

It looks so cold

This water, bold

As evening reaches crest

And yet I know

Aft icy blow

The warmth will be abreast

Is it so hard?

Why do I guard?

No logic can be found

Just jump right in

But wait! I grin

I will! The next time round

I promise, then

I’ll dive right in

I know the shock is short

Okay, let’s go!

Hang on! Go slow

No wait, I must abort

I must prepare

And get some air

For easy, it is not

To take the leap

It looks so steep

One chance is all you’ve got

This life’s not long

So sing your song

Leave worry in the past

For when you’re old

You’ll wish you’d told

Yourself to have a blast

Don’t be the one

To miss the fun

Make every second count

As fortune faves

The bold in waves

The risk worth all amount

Your life is yours

Not boring chores

This, please understand

It starts with you

That water, blue

Don’t waste away in sand

Just take a toe

And dip it slow

The cold will soon feel hotter

The time is here

No more “next year”

It starts with toe in water

The Gentleman

Chivalrys dead!

Or so it is said

On this, I ponder quite long

It’s really no chore

Kindly holding your door

Yet you glare, like something is wrong

It’s fine! Some will sneer

I’ll get it! They’ll jeer

Independent, a woman am I

Your help? I’ve no need

These mouths, he shall feed

Career driven, focused, my guy

Well fine I shall say

As I walk far away

I just thought I would lend you a hand

And one day, when he cheats

Hope he’s good in the sheets

Cause you won’t get much else from him, ma’am

The Con of Cons

To give a little context, below is a reflection of my experience (as a volunteer) at the first Game of Thrones conference ever held. Working the Con provided a pretty good view of how things went administratively. I daresay the vast majority of the weekend was a massive success, but there was (understandably) a slight hiccup here and there. You know, little stuff that’s an inevitable part of any big event like this.

Without further adieu – fonas chek, everyone!

THE CON OF CONS

Alrighty my friends

Just a sec, listen up

The sad end has arrived

So let’s all raise a cup

And bid fond farewell

I hope you all will agree

To meet up next year

For Freefolk, are we

So many great friends

It seems we’ve all made

Which means Con number two

Will put this one to shame

Much more stuff can we plan

Since we all made a mate

Epic fun is in store

So be sure to hydrate

And before I forget

As a Con volunteer

All the suggestions ya’ll made

Will help planning next year

Rest assured, worry not

All the kinks will be gone

This year taught one thing:

How to properly Con

And one other thing

If Valyrian pass, did you claim

Sincere apologies, accept

If you thought it was lame

But fear not, VIPs

For next year you shall see

That the perks you’ll enjoy

Will be worth all its fee

Your photos shall print fast

All in focus – not a glitch

But for real, jokes aside

Working photos…was a bitch

Now let’s all look ahead

At two thousand eighteen

And as friends, all await

Until we next reconvene

On a serious note – I can’t describe how grateful I am to have met you guys. This weekend was the most fun I’ve had in quite some time. This was also my first Con, so thank you all for making it such an unforgettable one! Next year can’t get here soon enough!!

Love you guys!

Matt
Oh, and while I’m here: if you’d enjoy more of teh rhymez, here’s a link to one that was my favorite to scribble.

An Ode to the Letter “Q”

Quiet! I must concentrate

Q is hard to satiate

Quarrels make me want to quit

Quirks in words which don’t quite fit

Quorum comes when all are here

Quickly now, our quest is near

Quantify a love for two

Q is married, to the U

An Ode to the Letter “O”

Over, under, bottom, top

Odes to letters never stop

On the day I get to Z

Old and wrinkled, I may be

Or young and youthful, hopefully

Only time will tell, you see

Our lives are short, we need to grind

Otherwise we’re wasting time

An Ode to the Letter “N”

Naughty naughty little N

Never helping me

Nothing useful ever comes from

Negativity

No and never, none and nor

N is oh so rude

Neighbors M and O must want to

Nix that attitude

An Ode to the Letter “J”

Jack and Jill went up the hill

Jogging straight up and down

Joking and playing, having a thrill

Joy till he broke his crown

Jumping in fear, Jill looked around

Jolting across the way

Jeering, she returned and scooped him up

Jill’s stick was shaped like a J

The Real Revolution: the War We Don’t Know We’re Fighting

Its no secret that humanity is going through one of its tensest periods in our short history on this planet. Class warfare, social control, and behind the scenes manipulation has dominated the population for as long as we can look back. The individuals who had the ability to think openly, see the world as a blank canvas, and paint their own picture have consistently taken advantage of the masses who have sadly followed their directions, unable to realize the power they’ve actually held.

This historical clash seems to be coming to a head in what I can only attribute to the advent of the internet. Many of my posts have referenced this, primarily because I want people to truly realize its significance. Now, more than ever, humanity has the opportunity to openly communicate and coordinate, finally giving the silent majority a chance to come together and craft a just, accountable society.

Its vital that we understand this. It is absolutely imperative that we see how today’s hostile environment has been created by design. Racism, terrorism, radicalization – all of these things are manifested out of highly elaborate, impeccably implemented psychological maneuvers. We must realize how intelligent the powers that be truly are – as awareness is the first step in our efforts to combat them.

This unspoken war for our sovereignty has been going on for a very, very long time. Historically, those who saw the world for it is and fought against it were silenced. Consider the many who have represented the masses that were stopped before reaching their full potential: JFK, MLK, Lincoln, the list goes on. Those in control know that the most powerful instrument against them is a simple ideal. A school of thought, created by brilliant, open minds, that could change the course of history if only they could unite the masses. When those that seek to control identify these threats, they take action. Its happened over, and over, and over, and over again.

This is the fight that we have to win. Its not an election. Its not one party over the other. Its not blacks, its not whites, its not an argument over kneeling or saluting. Its the war for our humanity.

The only way we can win, is together. We can’t fight oppression if we’re too busy fighting ourselves.

Please, for the love of us all, understand this.

The Time Has Come To Market

Well, now that I’m done with book # 2, I can start committing time and energy into something other than actually writing. Marketing, here we go.

Its funny to realize throughout this process of becoming a writer how many stages there are. First, you think to yourself : Man, I bet its hard to write a book. Then you write it. Afterwards, your next thoughts are: Geez, it sure is hard to find a publisher. Then you find a publisher and your book becomes available to anyone willing to read it. Which, of course, leads you to the hardest part. The part you didn’t think about before you wrote it. Well, I finally made it here. Now how do I get people to read my book?

Great question. My first inclination is to tell myself that this is going to require an inordinate amount of perseverance. I’m fully aware this isn’t going to happen overnight. Its going to take ingenuity. How can I reach the highest number of people in the most efficient manner possible? What’s the best way to market not only my book, but myself as an author?  Because you never know what other opportunities await out there in the world.

I find myself asking these questions constantly. Its like there’s an incessant itch for which I can’t find the correct scratch. And I suppose that’s a good thing, because it means I’ll continue to try until I get it right. So far I’ve been more focused on writing and hashing out the story than actually marketing it. So outside of my immediate social network, not much has been done. I suppose now I need to do something about that.

One thing I will say is that this blog has granted me access to some absolutely wonderful people. The internet is a wonderful thing, indeed. I hope one day I find myself on the other side of this equation, where I can point an up-and-comer to the path I took myself.

Oh, speaking of which:

I need a literary agent

Sometimes there’s an unmistakable instinct where you look at someone and realize – they’ll do whatever it takes to accomplish (x). Consider this one of those instances.

There is much I would like to accomplish with my writing, but it’s difficult to blindly attempt to continue without the guidance of someone versed in the industry. Have I taken writing classes? No. All I do is stream consciousness. I write what I think, nothing more. And I could certainly use a hand.
It would be nice to have someone to guide me, I have to be honest. I’ve entered a world where I’m in way over my head, and a little help would be more than welcome. So if anyone stumbles upon this and happens to know someone, by all means feel free to let me know. Because I’m flying by the seat of my pants at the moment, and that’s not really a very cool feeling.

Here I am, waiting. Patiently waiting.
