I read an article today that talked about how a group of off-duty cops had petitioned to be able to carry their weapons into public events like football games and such.
That got me thinking, and I wonder if they’re onto something. Considering today’s social climate where almost everywhere we turn there’s news of another shooting or bombing or what have you, I wonder if it would be a good idea to allow special carry parameters for certain, proven civilians. What do you think? Do you think public events would be safer if certain citizens were allowed to carry their weapons? Obviously there would be a strict screening process for this, but what if a new permit was instituted that allowed trustworthy citizens to carry their weapons wherever they go? Football games, rock concerts, you name it.
I’m not sure where I stand on this to be honest, but its certainly a hot topic as of late. It could be something halfway between being a public officer and a civilian. An “approved candidate”, so to speak. Someone you just KNOW is a good person and would do the right thing. Like you know how some people become notaries? Same concept. Only in this case we’re talking about public safety.
I don’t know. Its an intriguing idea though, right? With public safety being such a concern lately, I just really don’t think it’s fair that we have people walking around legitimately worried about terrorism and violence. Its like we’ve been robbed of our freedom to explore and be free – and that’s not cool. Its sad to see a lot of the things going on in the world today, and coming up with a solution seems to be getting harder and harder.
I thought the privileged carry permit idea was an interesting one, if nothing else. If a city tried to pass such a bill, I’m sure it would be met with plenty of opposition – but at least it keeps the dialogue going until someone comes up with a better idea.
